Description
"COCKROACHE$ @ WORK" is about the infestation of capitalistic values in modern day society. It was created in NYU’s Avery Fisher Center for Music and Media, where they were able to project the video through their head end system to all of the monitors. The video itself was created using Adobe PhotoShop and Illustrator, then burned onto a blank Sony Disc DVD-R to project.
Symbolism
A money cockroach has the pyramid and eye imagery from USD bills as its head, chosen for the symbols’ association with Big Brother and the Illuminati. Andrew Jackson, from the twenty dollar bill, was chosen for the cockroach’s body because of his diabolical, exploitative actions. The cockroaches crawl in circles to symbolize the cyclical nature of capitalism, and dies at the end of the video to symbolize the unsustainable nature of late stage capitalism. All of the monitors show the same video, in sync, to symbolize how capitalistic ideals cause monotonous, crowd think behavior.
